Flute and Tin Whistle
TIN WHISTLE – TIM FLAHERTY & FIONA NÍ MHEARÁIN (Tuesdays)
Beginners – 7:00–8:00pm – Tim Flaherty
This class is suitable for complete beginners with no prior experience. The focus will be on learning how to hold and blow the whistle before starting to play some very simple tunes. If you have played before (even many years ago), please attend the Improvers class.
Improvers – 8:00–9:00pm – Tim Flaherty
This class is for those with a little prior experience. Did you play the whistle years ago in school? Can you play a scale or a simple tune? Then this is the class for you. We work on learning simple tunes by ear and improving your facility with the instrument.
Intermediate – 6:00–7:00pm – Fióna Ní Mhearáin
Learn the basics of ornamentation and variations while also learning more complex tunes by ear, such as reels and slip jigs. This class is for students with some previous flute experience.
FLUTE – DAVY MAGUIRE
Beginners – 7:00–8:00pm (Tuesdays)
This class is open to beginners who have completed a term at the complete beginners level and can achieve a secure technique for blowing the wooden flute. Students typically spend a few terms at this level learning the notes, mastering technique, and learning simple tunes like airs, polkas, and jigs.
Advanced – 8:00–9:00pm (Tuesdays)
Suitable for players with some experience of the flute who are interested in challenging tunes and applying ornamentation and variations to their playing.
Intermediate – 6:00–7:00pm (Wednesdays)
Learn the basics of ornamentation and variations while also learning more complex tunes by ear, such as reels and slip jigs. This class is for students with some prior flute experience.

Davy Maguire
Flute All Levels
Davy is one of the most significant flute players of his generation, known not only in Belfast, but on the European continent for his dynamic and powerful style. He has travelled regularly to Britanny and formed a strong playing partnership with the Breton flute player Jean Michelle Veillon. Davy is equally well-known for his humour and teaching ability and he is respected as one of Belfast's finest musical sons.
TIM FLAHERTY
Beginners & Improvers Whistle
Tim is a dancer, accordion player and Tin whistler. From Belfast, he is known throughout the continent for his gentle good humour. Tim regularly teaches set dancing around Ireland and Europe and plays a key role in the delivery of dance tuition for Belfast Trad. He doubles as our beginners and improvers tin whistle tutor.
FIÓNA NÍ MHEARÁIN
Kids & Adult Tin Whistle
Fióna began learning whistle as a child with BelfastTrad tutor and flute player, Davy Maguire. She has a long relationship with BelfastTrad having been involved with the society as a student, a committee member, administrator and a tutor. She is a qualified teacher and over the years has taught in a wide range of settings. She loves to make difficult and challenging skills accessible for learners of all ages.
